You can look in the mirror and find a million things wrong with yourself. Or you can look in the mirror and think, ‘I feel good, I have my health, and I’m so blessed.’ That’s the way I choose to look at it. – Isla Fisher
Day Eight: Reflect
When I first began therapy, my counsellor made me do something that I hated at the time, but it was a necessary step to raising my self-esteem. She told me to stand in front of the mirror and look at myself (just typing it makes me shudder!). I have lots of scars and moles on my body that I hate, and whenever I looked at my reflection this is all I could notice and think about.
She told me to look in the mirror and rather than drawing my attention to my ‘flaws’ immediately, instead to look at myself as a whole person. And that is our task for today…
Look at your reflection (this could be in a face mirror to start with if whole body is too daunting) and pick out three positives. This doesn’t have to be related to physical appearance – your reflection is ALL OF YOU, inside and outside.
My positives (bearing in mind I’m off work ill today from a sickness bug so really not looking my best!):
- Kind and friendly eyes
- I like my hair colour at the moment – the ombre style!
- I also see a woman who has overcome challenges and been brave
