Really, people aren’t that worried about what you’re doing or what you’re saying, so you can drift around the world relatively anonymously: you must not feel persecuted and examined. Liberate yourself from that idea that people are watching you.
– Russell Brand
Day Thirteen: Liberate
Loving Russell Brand’s quote – many of us live our lives feeling like everyone else is watching and judging us. Most of the time people are more pre-occupied with themselves – when you look at a group photo, doesn’t your focus go immediately to how you look, rather than others? The people who do judge are often suffering themselves and we actually need to send compassion out to them.
Today I encourage you to consider what you need to feel liberated. What is stopping you from being 100% yourself? Is it the fear of judgement from others or something else? There is power in recognising this so you can start to take steps to free yourself from whatever is holding you back.
What stops me:
I am a classic people pleaser – I want everyone to like me and I hate disappointing people, particularly my parents!! Sometimes I make decisions and act in a certain way because I feel like that’s what I SHOULD do rather than what I truly WANT to do. Sometimes I hold back on what I want to say because I worry about people not liking me as a result.
Going back to the FEED theme in day nine, and recognising that my true passion is travel – I know I have at times pushed this away because I feel like I should buy a house and get a well paid job instead.
It is good to write this and remind myself that people pleasing results in less true happiness, a fake version of myself and lower self-esteem because I am pushing my own needs away.
Next, we accept.
