There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.
– Bryant H. McGill
Day 16: Forgive
We are often encouraged to show love to others by forgiving them for their mistakes. As McGill’s quote highlights, it’s hard to love without forgiving and you need love to show that forgiveness. It’s the same with forgiving yourself. Without self love, you will find it hard to forgive yourself for your mistakes, and if you don’t forgive yourself, it is impossible to have high self-esteem. Cue: vicious circle!
Today, forgive yourself for a past mistake. No human is perfect, mistakes are completely normal and even if this is a mistake that is bigger and more significant than others, it is now out of your control. Focus on what you can control, and move on.
Forgiving myself:
Today I’ll forgive myself not just for one single past mistake, but generally for prioritising myself more than others this year. I’ve beaten myself up for not texting people back sometimes, for saying ‘no’ to plans, for forgetting to send a birthday card to friends (this is one of my 2019 resolutions to remember everyone!), and for focusing more on my own needs than others.
Today, I’m forgiving myself for this because I know I need to focus on loving myself, and in turn this will lead to me helping others.
