I fully embraced Eurovision last night…I went dressed as Sweden which obviously turned out to be an excellent choice when they won!
Eurovision is an excellent example of people embracing their true self and showing it off to the world (even China this year) in all its glory.
Conchita Wurst, the winner of last year’s contest, is a gay drag queen. The Eurovision stage gave Conchita the opportunity to be himself, which must have been a real boost to his self-esteem. I imagine he went through years of questioning himself and what he truly desired, and worrying about whether people would accept him as a woman.
Another event which made yesterday even better for LGBT rights was that Ireland became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote. Now this is a country which has become very homophobic over the past few years, whilst other European countries have been much better a treating homosexuality with respect. It is absolutely brilliant that people’s mindsets are finally changing.
I can only hope we can keep evolving as countries and as individuals, to embrace how we are all unique, different and good enough for the world in our own way…
